Girl Powered

Team 80516 ran a Girl Powered event in October 2018 at Erie Middle School, and the girls from teams 80516E and 80516G demoed their robots and talked about the VEX robotics competition.

Erie Cafe

Team 80516 had a table at the annual Erie Middle School Cafe, which showcases the clubs and electives available to incoming students. Members of the club handed out flyers and got people excited about VEX.

ICART Interns

The Innovation Center Aquatic Robotics Team (ICART) began in February 2016 when researchers at Denver Zoo approached the St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) about having a group of students build and test an Open ROV 2.8 submarine drone as part of an ongoing conservation and research program. Since its inception, ICART has worked on several aquatic robotics projects and has provided its student project members with paid and volunteer opportunities to participate in engineering projects for real-world clients.

To expand the program’s reach as well as build a talent pipeline for the project teams, ICART has launched a  middle school intern program. The new program engages younger students with dynamic and authentic STEM learning experiences, exposes them to the projects the IC high school students are working on, and builds their core engineering and computer science skills so that when they are ready to join an active project team they will have the capability to do advanced work.

The twenty 2018-19 ICART interns were nominated and selected from SVVSD middle schools for their interest in and aptitude for robotics and design. The group is mentored by a mix of SVVSD staff and volunteer subject matter experts, and meets twice per month at the Innovation Center to work on mini-projects ranging from coding and CAD design to fabrication and project management.

Bethany L and Maryn P are representing EMS and team 80516 this year in ICART.

Volunteering at VEX IQ Competitions

Multiple members of our club have previously competed in VEX IQ and enjoy volunteering at local VEX IQ tournaments. So far this year, members of our club have volunteered as referees, field resetters, and award presenters. Additionally, many of our mentors and parents judge and referee at VRC and VEX IQ events that we’re not competing in.
